Virginia Man Sentenced to Life for Double Murder Scheme
Brendan Banfield was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife and another man in a plot involving an au pair and a fetish website. His lover is serving a 10-year sentence for her involvement.
Brendan Banfield, a resident of Herndon, Virginia, received a life sentence without parole after being convicted of murdering his wife, Christine Banfield, and another man, Joseph Ryan, in a planned scheme. The incident, which took place in 2023, involved a fetish website and an au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, who was previously sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter in connection with the case.
Banfield, a former IRS agent, was found guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, the use of a firearm in a felony, and child endangerment. During the sentencing, Judge Penney Azcarate commented that while life in prison is a severe punishment, it is warranted in this case. Banfield maintained his innocence, stating, "I was found guilty of a crime that I did not commit," while expressing his love for his wife.
Prosecutors detailed that Banfield and Magalhães had used the fetish website to lure Ryan to their home under the pretense of a violent sexual role-play. After Ryan arrived, Banfield allegedly shot him and then attacked his wife, making it appear he acted in her defense. The case attracted significant media attention due to its shocking nature and the elaborate setup.
