Trump Rules Out Permanent Appointment for Acting DNI Bill Pulte
President Trump announced that Bill Pulte will not be permanently appointed as Director of National Intelligence, shortly after his selection to the acting role. Pulte's nomination has faced bipartisan criticism regarding his qualifications.
President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that Bill Pulte, recently appointed as the acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI), will not be considered for the permanent position. Trump made the announcement just two days after Pulte replaced outgoing DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who has been embroiled in controversy herself.
During a White House briefing, Trump emphasized that Pulte is not looking for a permanent role, saying, "It's not a permanent, he's not going to be permanent, because you know, I don't think he'd want to be permanent." Trump described Pulte as a smart individual and hinted at his involvement in domestic investigations, stating, "He's a very smart guy, and you may find out some things about the rigged elections."
Gabbard's tenure as DNI has been criticized for her perceived lack of intelligence experience, prompting concerns from lawmakers on both sides. Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked, "We don't need a weaponized DNI, we need professionals there," while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer referred to Pulte as "a partisan thug with no experience in intelligence."
Trump noted that they are currently interviewing candidates for a permanent DNI and reaffirmed Pulte's continued leadership at the Federal Housing Finance Agency while serving in the acting role. The DNI oversees the U.S. intelligence community, which includes agencies such as the CIA and NSA.
