Gas Prices Decline Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict, Future Uncertain

Summary

National average gas prices have fallen to $4.26 per gallon as oil costs decrease, but analysts warn of potential increases if the conflict in Iran continues.

Recent data indicates that the national average price of gasoline has dropped to $4.26 per gallon, a decrease of 30 cents or 6.5% since reaching a peak on May 21. This comes despite ongoing tensions related to the Iran conflict, which have previously disrupted oil supply. In February, the average price was under $3 per gallon.

Analysts attribute the recent decline in gas prices to falling oil prices towards the end of May and a drop in demand following Memorial Day weekend. However, they caution that prices may rise again if oil prices increase or if the conflict continues without resolution. Patrick Penfield, a supply chain expert at Syracuse University, noted, "It's so volatile. If the war ended, prices would likely go down. But if it continues, you'll see prices go up."

Georgia currently has the lowest average gas prices at approximately $3.79 per gallon, while California experiences the highest at $5.99, although prices have fallen in recent days. The rise in gasoline costs earlier in the war was linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global oil transport. Recently, U.S. oil prices dipped around $86 per barrel, a 20% decrease over ten days, largely due to expectations of a potential agreement with Iran.

Experts suggest that as long as oil prices remain below $100 per barrel, gas prices may stabilize or continue to decline. Denton Cinquegrana, chief oil analyst at Dow Jones Energy, remarked that sellers have maintained higher profit margins, which allows for the possibility of lower retail prices. However, looking ahead, analysts express concern about the potential for gas prices to exceed $5 per gallon if the Strait of Hormuz does not return to normal operations. Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy warned of the likelihood of higher prices, particularly in the lead-up to July 4.
