John Bolton agrees to plead guilty in classified information case

Resumen

John Bolton, former national security advisor to President Trump, has reached a plea agreement concerning classified information retained in a private diary, potentially facing up to five years in prison.

John Bolton, who previously held the position of national security advisor under President Donald Trump, has agreed to plead guilty to charges related to the retention of classified information from his private diary. Reports indicate that Bolton may face a sentence of up to 60 months in prison and a fine of $2.25 million as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors regarding this single count.

The indictment specifies that Bolton shared more than a thousand pages of his daily activities as national security advisor, which included classified information up to the TOP SECRET/SCI level, with two unauthorized individuals, identified as his wife and daughter. Neither of these individuals had the required security clearances. The former advisor was indicted in October by a federal grand jury in Maryland, following a raid by FBI agents on his home and office in August.

Bolton is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, on June 26, where he is expected to formally enter his guilty plea. Upon his indictment, Bolton maintained his innocence, suggesting that he was being targeted due to his public criticism of Trump. He joins the ranks of other Trump critics, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who have also faced legal challenges during Trump's presidency.
