Development Project Tied to Kushner Sparks Environmental Protests in Albania

A significant coastal development project in Albania, connected to Jared Kushner, is encountering substantial opposition from environmental activists and local protesters. The Albanian government advocates that this initiative, which aims to enhance the country’s appeal as a high-end tourist destination, is crucial for its European Union aspirations.

The project includes developments in the Narta Lagoon area, a designated wildlife reserve, and on the nearby uninhabited Sazan Island, previously a military base. Plans involve constructing hotels, apartments, villas, and a marina linked to both Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump. In a recent interview, Ivanka Trump recounted how they discovered the site while on a boat trip, leading to their interest in the development.

Opponents express concern that the project threatens vital natural habitats, particularly in one of Albania’s most biodiverse regions, critical for migratory birds. Tensions escalated following an incident where a protester was forcibly removed during a demonstration at the site. Inflated public anger was illustrated by protesters showcasing cardboard cut-outs of pink flamingos, a protected species in the area.

Despite ongoing protests, Prime Minister Edi Rama remains committed to the project, emphasizing its potential impact on the country’s tourism industry. He stated, "Albania should not be a country that fears an extraordinary project like this one," and assured that the investment would proceed. In contrast, a similar venture in Serbia saw legal issues arise, cautioning about potential challenges ahead for the Albanian development. The project's legitimacy is under scrutiny, with claims regarding the privatization process being contested, as an investigation by the state anti-corruption agency is ongoing.
