California Governor's Race Awaiting Results as Ballot Counting Continues
The race for California's governorship remains unresolved with state election officials still counting ballots, a process that could extend for weeks.
The race to determine California's next governor has not yet reached a conclusion, as voters may have to wait several weeks for final results. State election officials are currently working through a backlog of uncounted primary ballots, which could take days or potentially weeks to complete. British-born conservative Steve Hilton holds a narrow lead, followed by former US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, while billionaire Tom Steyer is trailing them.
California's primary system allows the top two vote-getters to advance to the general election, but election officials warn that the identities of these candidates may remain uncertain for some time. According to state law, counties must complete ballot counting by June 15, though some ballots, such as mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by June 9, can still be processed past this deadline. An estimate of the remaining unprocessed ballots is expected to be released shortly.
Many Democratic voters delayed submitting their mail-in ballots until Election Day, contemplating which candidate stood the best chance of advancing. Despite the ongoing counting, former President Donald Trump has already declared victory for Hilton, stating on social media, "If Californians are smart, which I know they are, they will put Steve into the Governor’s Mansion, and watch their State get better at a rate that has probably never been seen before."
