Protests Erupt in Albania Over Kushner's Luxury Resort Development

Thousands of Albanians have participated in protests against Jared Kushner’s proposed luxury resort on Sazan Island, raising concerns about environmental implications and the potential impact on local communities. This unrest follows Ivanka Trump’s recent comments on a podcast, where she described the development as a reflection of her vision for living and a manifestation of her experiences in real estate.

The Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has expressed support for the project, asserting that the country must remain welcoming to investors and emphasizing that the investment will proceed as planned. He noted, "It is very important that we remain welcoming... under no circumstances do we receive the stigma of being a country where investors are met with hostility."

Albanian anti-corruption prosecutors are currently investigating changes to laws that facilitate tourism development on protected lands, which adds a layer of scrutiny to the project. Despite the ongoing protests, developers have pledged to prioritize environmental responsibility and community value. Asher Abehsera, chairman of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, stated their focus would be on "responsible stewardship, environmental enhancement, job creation, and creating long-term value for local communities."

Currently, there is no established timeline for the completion of the resort, as final plans have yet to be submitted to the Albanian government. Additionally, significant financing for Kushner’s ventures has been reported to come from foreign government wealth funds, predominantly from the Middle East. Kushner’s previous attempt to develop a Trump-branded property in Serbia was abandoned amid allegations of corruption involving local officials.
