A hostage standoff at a Chase bank in Bakersfield, California, ended with the suspect deceased following an officer-involved shooting by FBI personnel, while all hostages were reported unharmed.

A standoff at a Chase bank in downtown Bakersfield, California, which began with a bomb threat call on Tuesday, concluded early Wednesday morning after the suspect was shot by FBI personnel. The incident started around 1 p.m. local time, leading to the evacuation of surrounding buildings as police, along with SWAT teams, hostage negotiators, and a bomb squad, responded to the scene.

During negotiations, one hostage was released on Tuesday evening, followed by a second release shortly after 9 p.m., according to Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon. However, the situation escalated overnight, culminating in an officer-involved shooting at approximately 4:20 a.m., resulting in the suspect being pronounced dead at the scene.

The Bakersfield Police Department, which did not participate in the shooting, confirmed that the remaining hostages were unharmed and provided medical evaluations. Notably, a spokesperson for Chase Bank acknowledged the situation, stating the branch was currently unoccupied and they were cooperating with law enforcement. Local authorities expect continued road closures and traffic delays in the area as investigations proceed.
