Run-off confirmed in Colombia's presidential election amid unexpected results

Colombia's presidential election will proceed to a run-off between Abelardo de la Espriella and Ivan Cepeda after a surprising first round. De la Espriella, a political outsider, garnered 43.74 percent of the vote, while Cepeda, the favored successor to President Gustavo Petro, received 40.90 percent. Celebrations erupted in Barranquilla among de la Espriella’s supporters, as he emphasized a return to ‘law and order’ and harsher crime policies, echoing populist styles seen in other countries.

Analysts attribute de la Espriella's appeal to his focus on security in central regions, where concerns over urban crime are prominent. Deputy director of the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation, Laura Bonilla, noted that different regions prioritize differing issues, with coastal and border voters leaning towards Cepeda’s socioeconomic focus.

De la Espriella’s strong performance also reflects a growing anti-establishment sentiment, dismissing traditional conservative candidates in favor of his fresh approach. In contrast, Cepeda's supporters expressed shock over the election results, which contradicted pre-election polling.

Following the preliminary results, Petro expressed skepticism about the integrity of the vote count, calling for patience until the official count is released. Cepeda echoed this caution, though later acknowledged the lack of evidence of fraud, as he trailed de la Espriella by over 670,000 votes. As the run-off approaches on June 21, political strategists advise both candidates to focus on attracting undecided voters.
