The recent explosion of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket at Launch Complex-36 (LC-36) in Florida has led to substantial damage, clearly visible from space. On May 28, while conducting a fueling test for its fourth mission, the incident resulted in the complete destruction of the rocket and damage to critical ground infrastructure, though no injuries were reported.
Satellite imagery has revealed significant charred areas surrounding the launchpad, indicating extensive impact on the facility, including the launch tower and support systems. Blue Origin, which leases LC-36 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, is aware that the extensive damage could disrupt its commitment to supporting NASA's Artemis missions aimed at returning astronauts to the moon.
CEO Dave Limp stated that the company is initiating plans to clear and rebuild the damaged pad. Following the incident, Limp and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos engaged with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman to secure support for the ongoing investigation. The rocket was intended to facilitate the launch of Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander, part of NASA's lunar landing missions. However, repairs to LC-36 are likely to delay these plans by several months, potentially impacting schedules for future Artemis missions and related lunar operations.
