Rescue Efforts Intensify for Two Trapped in Laotian Cave

摘要

Rescue teams in Laos are actively searching for two individuals who have been trapped in a flooded cave for nearly two weeks, exploring alternative access routes in response to impassable conditions.

Rescue workers in Laos are diligently seeking new passages into a flooded cave where two individuals have been trapped for nearly two weeks due to heavy rainfall that has rendered the main entrance inaccessible. The search operation commenced last month in Xaisomboun province, approximately 120 kilometers north of Vientiane, after five of the seven individuals initially trapped in the cave were successfully rescued.

Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie, part of the rescue effort, mentioned that teams are currently working to pump water out of the cave. He indicated that the search will proceed into suspected areas once water levels decrease. A separate team is also investigating the cave's opposite side for possible dry routes that may lead to the missing persons.

Over the past week, rescuers from Laos and Thailand have collaborated with divers from several countries, including Finland, Malaysia, and France. Many team members participated in the 2018 rescue operation in Thailand that saved a group of boys from a submerged cave.

Heavy rains have significantly increased the water flow into the cave system, prompting authorities to briefly halt search operations over the weekend. Kengkaj Bongkawong, head of a Thai rescue group, noted efforts to find air shafts from above that could provide additional access. He cautioned that discovering a viable entrance will present significant challenges, including the need for ventilation and ongoing water management.

The two missing individuals reportedly entered the cave nearly two weeks ago in search of minerals before being trapped by flash flooding, while one villager managed to escape and alert rescuers.
