European leaders denounce Israel's military actions in Lebanon

Summary

European leaders have expressed their condemnation of Israel's military incursion into Lebanon, prompting France to request an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

European leaders have condemned Israel’s escalating military incursion into Lebanon, highlighted by the Israeli capture of the historic Beaufort castle. French President Emmanuel Macron called for an immediate halt to the violence, asserting that "nothing justifies the major escalation under way in south Lebanon." Following this, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, scheduled for Monday.

The foreign ministers of the UK and Germany joined the call for restraint, with Britain’s Yvette Cooper urging that the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been in effect since April, should be upheld. The fighting, which began when Hezbollah fired rockets in response to the US-Israeli killing of Iran’s supreme leader, has resulted in over a million people displaced and thousands of casualties, including many civilians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the capture of Beaufort castle as a significant advance in the campaign against Hezbollah, stating, "We have returned united, determined and stronger than ever," and emphasizing the need to deepen Israeli control in areas previously held by the militant group. However, experts have raised questions about the strategic value of the castle’s capture, suggesting it may serve more as a public relations victory than a military solution to the issue at hand.

Negotiations between Israeli and Lebanese officials, the first in over thirty years, began in April. Although these talks are continuing, Hezbollah is not participating and has rejected the potential outcomes. These developments complicate ongoing efforts for a stable peace agreement between the US and Iran, with Tehran maintaining that any ceasefire extension must address the hostilities in Lebanon.
