Flight Diverted After Attempted Cockpit Breach by Passenger
A United flight from Chicago to Minneapolis was diverted to Wisconsin after a 75-year-old man attempted to breach the cockpit, prompting a hijacking alert. There were no reported injuries, and the FBI is investigating but will not pursue charges.
A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Minneapolis had to divert to Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night after a 75-year-old passenger attempted to gain access to the cockpit. The Boeing 737, carrying 147 passengers and six crew members, was in the air when the crew issued a hijacking alert just before 9 p.m. as they struggled to manage the unruly passenger.
Five law enforcement officers who were aboard the flight intervened to subdue the individual. One passenger, Mike Rundle, described the scene, noting that a man assisting as an interpreter was not the suspect. He recounted seeing law enforcement approach the suspect, who was eventually handcuffed and escorted off the plane. Rundle remarked on the seriousness of the situation, highlighting concerns over the intentions of anyone attempting to breach the cockpit. Following security checks by authorities, all passengers were able to continue their journey.
The FBI is currently leading the investigation but confirmed that no charges would be filed.
