Newark Mayor Imposes Curfew Amid Ongoing Protests
A curfew has been enacted around Delaney Hall in Newark following violent clashes between protestors and police regarding conditions at the immigration detention center.
A curfew has been instituted around the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, beginning at 9 p.m. and lasting until 6 a.m. This decision follows a series of confrontations between police and demonstrators protesting what they describe as poor living conditions at the facility, which has become a focal point in opposition to federal immigration policies.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill commented on the situation, stating that recent actions by some masked individuals during protests included attacking barriers set up by police, throwing projectiles, and lighting tires on fire, which she asserted endangered both protestors and law enforcement. Sherrill emphasized the need for calm and urged advocates to concentrate on promoting improvements for detainees and their families, as well as the potential closure of Delaney Hall. Additionally, she announced that the federal government will resume family visits at the facility starting Sunday, aimed at easing tensions following the unrest.
