A catastrophic failure of a chemical tank at a paper mill in Longview has claimed the lives of 11 workers, according to officials. The Cowlitz County Coroner's Office confirmed the recovery of the final body on Saturday, bringing the total fatalities to 11. Longview Fire Department Chief Brad Hannig stated, "I hope today will give the families so affected by this incident the closure needed to begin the long process of healing."
The incident occurred Tuesday morning when a tank, which held more than 500,000 gallons of a hazardous chemical mixture used in paper production, collapsed at the Nippon Dynawave facility. Among the deceased were brothers Tyler Covington, 29, and Brad Covington, 27. The other victims included Gilbert Bernal, 52; John Forsberg, 51; Clinton Doran, 26; Jared Ammons, 35; Braydon Finkas, 38; Robert Wilson, 48; Dale Miller, 54; Norman Barlow, 58; and Dillon Miller.
Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of the tank's collapse, and investigations by state and federal agencies are ongoing. This incident represents one of the most severe workplace disasters in recent US history and has sparked concerns among regulators regarding safety protocols in the industry.
