Federal Judge to Review Trump's Controversial $1.8 Billion Fund

Summary

A federal judge will review the legality of the Trump administration's $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponization fund' after concerns were raised by a group of former federal judges.

A federal judge has agreed to review the Trump administration's $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponization fund' following a motion from 35 former federal judges questioning its legitimacy. Established after Trump's lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax returns, the fund has faced significant backlash. The judges argued that the lawsuit represents a conflict of interest, stating that Trump is both the plaintiff and the defendant. They labeled the lawsuit a potential 'fraud on the court' and alleged it was a justification for 'looting' taxpayer money.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams stated that she is 'empowered to investigate serious misconduct' pertaining to the case. Previously, another judge in Virginia, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema, had ordered a temporary freeze on the fund, claiming it could be used to benefit Trump allies and those affected by the January 6 events. Brinkema scheduled a hearing for June 12 to discuss whether to extend this order.

Legal experts have raised concerns regarding the fund's oversight and its disconnection from the claims within Trump's IRS lawsuit. Adam Zimmerman, a law professor, criticized the fund as it does not address identifiable legal injuries and offers compensation to an unspecified group without any formal legal claims. Zimmerman described it as 'unlike anything we've seen in the history of the republic.'
