During his opening monologue on Real Time With Bill Maher, the host expressed skepticism about the Freedom 250 concert series scheduled for June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall. Maher noted the announced lineup included artists like Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, and Bret Michaels, and humorously remarked on the concerning trend of performers declining to participate.
He highlighted that numerous artists, after the lineup's reveal, opted out of the event, stating, "That’s got to hurt a lot when you can’t close the deal with Milli Vanilli." The Freedom 250 initiative is described as a nonpartisan event but has received significant backing from former President Trump, leading to backlash from several artists.
Among those withdrawing are The Commodores, Young MC, and Martina McBride, who voiced disappointment in a social media post about the misleading nature of the event's initial presentation. Brett Michaels also cited a shift in the event's tone as a reason for his exit, asserting that it had become more divisive than intended. Despite the withdrawals, artists like Fab Morvan from Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice have confirmed their participation.
