A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Minneapolis was diverted to Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night after a passenger made multiple attempts to breach the cockpit, prompting concerns for safety. Following the incident, law enforcement officers on board were able to restrain the passenger before the aircraft landed safely.
Audio recordings from air traffic control revealed that crew members described the situation as serious, explaining that the passenger was subdued by law enforcement personnel traveling on the flight. Once grounded, local authorities detained the passenger, although the FBI has not disclosed his identity or the potential charges.
Mike Rundle, a passenger, recounted a tense scene mid-flight, noting that another traveler had witnessed the detained passenger reaching out towards a flight attendant before being restrained. After the flight returned to Madison, police boarded the aircraft and escorted the individual off the plane.
The incident reportedly began before takeoff when the suspect stood up during taxiing at O'Hare International Airport. Crew members requested assistance from a passenger who could speak Russian to help communicate with him. He eventually complied and took his seat, allowing the flight to continue its departure.
The Boeing 737 was carrying 147 passengers and six crew members, and there were no reported injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration documented the event and stated that it monitors unruly passenger incidents, which have numbered over 640 this year. Legal enforcement can be pursued against individuals who disrupt airline operations, with fines reaching up to $43,658 per violation.
