Flight Diverted After Passenger Attempts Cockpit Breach
A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Minneapolis was diverted to Madison after a passenger attempted to breach the cockpit. The incident involved off-duty law enforcement officers on board and resulted in the passenger being detained.
A United Airlines flight, operating as Flight 2005, diverted to Dane County Regional Airport in Madison on Friday night after a passenger attempted to breach the cockpit. The aircraft, which took off from Chicago en route to Minneapolis, landed safely at approximately 9:30 p.m.
A spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed the flight landed due to a "security concern with an unruly passenger." Following the incident, the FBI Milwaukee's Madison Resident Agency and local law enforcement responded promptly, resulting in the detention of the suspect by the Dane County Sheriff's Office. Passengers were allowed to resume their journey shortly thereafter, according to FBI spokesperson Caroline Clancy.
Audio recordings indicated that off-duty law enforcement officers were present on the plane during the event. An individual relaying information stated, "Don't think they were able to cuff him but were able to get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit." Authorities have not provided details on potential injuries. The Boeing 737-900 was carrying over 140 individuals, including six crew members, and subsequently completed its flight to Minneapolis, arriving around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
