A collision involving a bus and multiple vehicles on Interstate 95 in Virginia resulted in five fatalities and 44 injuries early Friday morning.

A serious accident occurred on Interstate 95 in Virginia early Friday, claiming the lives of five individuals and injuring 44 others. The incident, which took place around 2:35 a.m. in Stafford County, began when a bus traveling from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina, failed to slow down as traffic congested due to a work zone. The bus collided with a Chevrolet Suburban, which subsequently forced into other vehicles, leading to a fire in an Acura SUV.

Among the deceased were four occupants of the Acura, identified as a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy, all from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The fifth victim, a 25-year-old woman, was in the Suburban. Authorities reported that 44 people were transported to hospitals, including three in critical condition. The bus driver, Jing S. Dong, also sustained injuries, and charges related to the incident are pending.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that federal investigators are looking into the driver's qualifications, noting that he did not speak English and received his commercial driver's license in 2024. Duffy emphasized the need for proper training and communication skills for bus drivers, stating, "If you can’t be properly trained, read our road signs, or communicate with law enforcement, you have no business driving a bus." The crash led to extensive traffic disruptions on I-95, which have since been resolved as all lanes are now reopened.
