Russian Drone Crash in Romania Prompts NATO Response

Résumé

A Russian drone targeted at Ukraine crashed into a residential building in Romania, causing injuries and sparking condemnation from NATO and the EU.

A Russian attack drone struck an apartment building in Galati, Romania, on Friday, resulting in injuries and raising tensions amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The drone was reportedly involved in an assault on Ukraine when it lost control and crashed, igniting a fire that injured two people and required medical attention for several others.

Romania's Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as a "serious violation of international law and of its airspace," promptly informing NATO and requesting expedited delivery of anti-drone capabilities. The ministry described the attack as an "irresponsible escalation" by Russia and indicated that it would take necessary diplomatic measures in response.

In the wake of the incident, NATO denounced Russia's actions and confirmed ongoing communication with Romanian authorities. Romania, as a NATO member, is entitled to collective security provisions, which include defense measures in cases of an attack.

Romania’s president, Nicusor Dan, called an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense, emphasizing the need for a "firm, coordinated response" at national and allied levels. He expressed that Romania would not tolerate the war in Ukraine affecting its citizens.

The event marks a notable escalation in risks stemming from the conflict, as it follows previous incidents of debris from Russian drones being discovered in Romania and airspace violations reported in other NATO countries. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the situation signifies that "Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line."
