Uganda Closes Border with Congo Amid Ebola Outbreak

Summary

Uganda has announced the closure of its border with Congo due to rising Ebola cases, following confirmed infections among Ugandan health workers. The World Health Organization warns that border closures could facilitate informal crossings, increasing the risk of disease spread.

Uganda has implemented a border closure with Congo in response to a surge of suspected cases of a rare form of Ebola known as Bundibugyo, following confirmed cases among Ugandan health workers exposed to the virus. This decision contradicts recommendations from the World Health Organization, which has expressed concerns about the risks associated with border closures.

As of now, Congo reports 121 confirmed Ebola cases and 17 deaths, with an additional 1,077 suspected cases in the country. Uganda has recorded seven confirmed cases, including one fatality. Dr. Diana Atwine from the Ugandan Ministry of Health indicated that border crossings will be restricted to emergency situations, and individuals entering Uganda from Congo will undergo mandatory isolation for 21 days.

Contact tracing and isolation are vital components in controlling the spread of this disease, which can be transmitted through bodily fluids of infected individuals. On a positive note, Congolese authorities reported the recovery and discharge of the first patient from a treatment center in Rwampara.

The WHO has cautioned against border closures, stating they could push crossings to unmonitored areas, thereby exacerbating contagion difficulties. The lengthy and porous Uganda-Congo border has numerous informal passageways, complicating control efforts. Additionally, the organization noted that ongoing violence in eastern Congo hinders effective outbreak management.

The U.S. is establishing a facility in Kenya for individuals who may have been exposed to Ebola. A U.S. doctor previously infected while in Congo has been treated in Germany, along with six others monitored elsewhere in Europe. Enhanced screening procedures are now mandatory for all American citizens returning from Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan, with designated airports established for this purpose. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the commitment to preventing the entry of any Ebola cases into the U.S.
