The Justice Department has commenced a criminal inquiry into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine writer who has accused Donald Trump of sexual assault. This investigation is reportedly scrutinizing whether Carroll committed perjury in her civil lawsuits against Trump, which resulted in a $5 million civil judgment against him for sexual abuse and defamation.
The inquiry has been opened by Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, as confirmed by a source familiar with the matter. Carroll's attorney has not yet provided a comment on the situation. The investigation comes after a federal jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the mid-1990s and for defaming her on social media.
Furthermore, Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, has recused himself from the case due to his previous representation of Trump in this matter. Trump is currently appealing a separate defamation judgment awarding Carroll $83 million, which a court has temporarily stayed pending appeal.
