Uganda Implements Border Closure with Congo Amid Ebola Surge

Summary

In response to a significant increase in Ebola cases in neighboring Congo, Uganda has closed its border, permitting only emergency crossings as health concerns escalate.

Ugandan health authorities have mandated the closure of the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, effective immediately, due to a surge in suspected Ebola cases near 1,000 in Congo. This decision comes as Uganda reports an increase in local health workers exposed to the virus from Congolese patients prior to the outbreak's declaration on May 15.

Dr. Diana Atwine of the Ministry of Health stated that border crossings will be allowed only under emergency circumstances, including outbreak response efforts, cargo transport, or security needs. Individuals entering Uganda under such conditions will undergo mandatory self-isolation for 21 days.

Congo's health ministry has confirmed over 100 cases of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with at least 220 suspected deaths, as they investigate over 3,000 potential contacts. The World Health Organization has classified this outbreak as a public health emergency but has advised against border closures, emphasizing that such actions could lead to unmonitored, informal crossings that increase disease transmission risks.

Additionally, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the challenges faced by responders, including under-preparedness and the impact of armed conflict in eastern Congo, which complicates efforts to track cases. In Uganda, there have been seven reported cases, prompting concerns regarding the safety of exposed health workers and their families. Health officials urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to hygiene protocols as celebrations over unrelated events have raised alarm about potential gatherings.

Aid groups report a critical shortage of supplies necessary for responding to the outbreak, exacerbating the already precarious situation in the region, which has faced multiple Ebola outbreaks.
