Plans for Penn Station Overhaul Include Classical Design and Presidential Accents
Renderings of the planned overhaul of Penn Station depict a substantial redesign featuring classical architecture, a new entrance, and notable elements linked to former President Donald Trump, including a presidential seal etched into a prominent location.
The upcoming renovation of Penn Station is set to include a major redesign aimed at enhancing the station's aesthetic and functionality. New architectural renderings reveal a plan featuring raised ceilings that could add up to 50 feet of height in some areas, alongside a new train hall adorned with American flags and gold accents.
Amtrak and the U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced the selection of Penn Transformation Partners as the master developer for the project, which is expected to begin by the end of 2027. Among the notable features is a proposed entrance on Eighth Avenue, which would require the demolition of the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Documents indicate that the design would bring in significantly more natural light, increasing the area receiving direct sunlight from 3,400 square feet to over 55,000 square feet.
Renderings obtained show a presidential seal and the name of former President Donald Trump prominently displayed, although discussions of renaming the hub as 'Trump Station' have been dismissed by state officials. Critics have expressed concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the bidding process, which kept details and plans from the public prior to the announcement.
The design also includes elements inspired by the original Beaux Arts architecture of the historic station, with large columns and additional features reminiscent of Trump’s other properties. As part of the project, plans include improving access to train tracks in anticipation of future capacity expansions, despite ongoing debates regarding the station's design limitations and crowding issues. Amtrak plans to begin permit applications and finalize contracts soon as they move toward breaking ground on this significant infrastructural project.
