Republican Lawmakers Criticize Trump's Proposed Iran Peace Deal

President Donald Trump's proposed agreement to conclude the conflict with Iran has encountered significant opposition from Republican lawmakers who advocate for a more stringent approach toward Tehran.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas expressed concern that the deal might allow Iran to retain its nuclear capabilities and regional influence. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina warned that the agreement could position Iran as a dominant regional force, potentially compromising the security of Gulf oil infrastructure. Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi criticized the proposed 60-day ceasefire, suggesting it could render previous military efforts ineffective.

In contrast, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky defended the administration's diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the importance of negotiations in ending conflicts.

President Trump dismissed the criticisms, stating that the deal is still under negotiation and emphasizing the need for a thorough and deliberate process. He assured that the U.S. military blockade on Iranian ports would remain until a finalized agreement is reached.

The conflict, initiated by the U.S. and Israel on February 28, has resulted in significant financial costs and public discontent. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global oil supplies, impacting the economy.

Former officials, including Mike Pompeo and John Bolton, have also criticized the emerging deal, expressing concerns that it may benefit Iran. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the administration's approach, affirming the president's commitment to preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.
