Ukraine Targets Russian Oil Infrastructure Amid Escalating Attacks

Summary

Ukrainian forces conducted a drone strike on Russia's Vtorovo oil pumping station, causing significant damage, while Russia launched a massive missile and drone assault on Kyiv, resulting in multiple casualties.

Ukrainian forces executed a drone strike on the Vtorovo oil pumping station in Russia's Vladimir Oblast on May 24, according to Ukraine's Security Service (SBU). The facility, operated by Transneft, is a key hub supplying fuel to Moscow Oblast and major airports, including Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo. The attack ignited a fire covering approximately 800 square meters.

The SBU stated that the operation was carried out by its elite Alpha unit under President Volodymyr Zelensky's orders. The agency emphasized that Ukraine targets only military and strategic sites linked to Russian aggression.

Concurrently, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv and its surrounding region. The attack involved 600 drones and 90 missiles, including the hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, marking its third use in the conflict. Ukrainian authorities reported at least four fatalities and nearly 100 injuries. The assault damaged residential buildings, schools, and government offices across multiple districts.

Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting or jamming the majority of the drones and missiles but acknowledged challenges in countering ballistic missiles due to a shortage of Patriot systems. European leaders condemned the attack, with the European Union announcing plans to increase pressure on Moscow.

These developments underscore the escalating use of drone and missile warfare in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
