Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence Amid Policy Disagreements

Summary

Tulsi Gabbard has resigned as the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, citing her husband's health, following tensions over foreign policy decisions.

Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, effective June 30, 2026, citing her husband's recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard's 15-month tenure was marked by tensions with the Trump administration, particularly over foreign policy decisions. Her opposition to military interventions, such as the conflict with Iran, often placed her at odds with President Donald Trump's strategies.

Despite her loyalty, Gabbard was frequently excluded from key national security discussions, including plans concerning Iran and Venezuela. Reports suggest that the White House had considered her removal prior to her resignation.

Gabbard's departure follows the earlier resignation of her top aide, Joe Kent, who left the administration two months prior, also in protest of the Iran conflict.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford commented on her resignation, stating, "Our prayers are with Director Gabbard and her husband, Abe. Such decisions are incredibly difficult, and we pray for them as they navigate this challenging time."

Gabbard is the fourth Cabinet official to depart during President Trump's second term.
