Chemical Tank Leak in Garden Grove Prompts Mass Evacuations

Summary

A hazardous chemical leak at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, has led to the evacuation of approximately 40,000 residents due to the risk of explosion or toxic exposure.

A hazardous chemical leak at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, California, has prompted the evacuation of approximately 40,000 residents across six cities, including Garden Grove, Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton, and Westminster. The incident began on Thursday when a 34,000-gallon storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA), a flammable chemical used in plastics manufacturing, overheated and started venting vapors.

Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey described the situation as unprecedented, noting that the tank is at risk of either cracking and leaking or exploding. Efforts to stabilize the tank have been hindered by broken valves, preventing the addition of neutralizing agents.

Health officials warn that exposure to MMA vapors can cause respiratory distress, nausea, and dizziness. Evacuation orders remain in effect as emergency crews work to mitigate the risk and prevent environmental contamination.
