Ebola Outbreak in DRC Declared Global Health Emergency Amid Rapid Spread

Summary

The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as cases and deaths continue to rise.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to its rapid escalation and cross-border spread. As of May 21, 2026, the DRC has reported 746 suspected cases and 176 deaths, with 83 confirmed cases and nine deaths. Uganda has confirmed two imported cases, including one death.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, presents additional challenges as there are no licensed vaccines or specific treatments available for this strain. The WHO has raised the national risk level to "very high," while the regional risk remains "high" and the global risk is considered "low."

Efforts to contain the virus are hindered by factors such as armed conflict, population mobility, and weak health systems in the affected regions. The WHO and partners are implementing response measures, including deploying rapid response teams, delivering medical supplies, strengthening surveillance, and engaging communities.

International aid is being mobilized, with the United Nations releasing $60 million and the United States pledging $23 million to support the establishment of treatment clinics. However, local hospitals continue to face shortages of essential protective gear, complicating efforts to control the outbreak.

The WHO emphasizes the need for sustained funding and international cooperation to prevent further spread and to support national governments in building capacities for surveillance, detection, and infection prevention.
