Trump Announces Deployment of 5,000 Additional U.S. Troops to Poland

President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland, reversing a previous decision to reduce the American military presence in Europe. This move has caused confusion among NATO allies and defense officials, who were preparing for a drawdown of U.S. forces.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the decision was influenced by his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he endorsed during the 2025 election.

The announcement comes shortly after the Pentagon halted a planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, part of a broader review of U.S. military commitments in Europe.

NATO allies have expressed bewilderment at the sudden policy shift. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard commented, "It is confusing indeed, and not always easy to navigate."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed the concerns, stating that the United States continually reassesses its global commitments and that such adjustments are routine.

Polish officials welcomed the decision. President Nawrocki expressed gratitude for the continued U.S. support, emphasizing the importance of the Polish-American alliance for regional security.

Currently, approximately 80,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Europe, with about 10,000 in Poland. The additional deployment is seen as a strategic reinforcement of NATO's eastern flank amid rising regional tensions.
