Federal Prosecutors Dismiss All Charges Against 'Broadview Six' Defendants

Resumen

Federal prosecutors have dismissed all remaining charges against the 'Broadview Six' defendants following revelations of misconduct during grand jury proceedings.

Federal prosecutors have dismissed all remaining charges against the 'Broadview Six' defendants, concluding a case that stemmed from a September 2025 protest outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois. The decision follows a closed-door hearing where U.S. District Judge April Perry reviewed unredacted grand jury transcripts and identified significant prosecutorial misconduct.

The defendants—former congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh, 45th Ward Democratic Committeeperson Michael Rabbitt, Oak Park Village Trustee Brian Straw, and Andre Martin—were initially charged with felony conspiracy and misdemeanor counts of forcibly impeding a federal agent. Earlier this month, the felony charges were dropped, leaving only the misdemeanor counts, which have now also been dismissed.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros acknowledged the misconduct, stating he was "completely unaware" of the issues until recently. He emphasized that "no one acted with the intent to mislead your honor." However, Judge Perry expressed concern over the continued vilification of the defendants, noting that Boutros's remarks were "significantly undercutting your mea culpa here by standing behind the charges and continuing to vilify these particular defendants."

Defense attorney Christopher Parente criticized the prosecution's handling of the case, describing the grand jury proceedings as "gross misconduct" and stating that the actions "should shame every American." He highlighted issues such as prosecutors dismissing grand jurors who disagreed with them and failing to disclose a 'No True Bill'—an indication that no indictment was returned—to the defense or the public.

The charges originated from an incident on September 26, 2025, when protesters surrounded an ICE agent's vehicle outside the Broadview facility, allegedly impeding its movement and causing damage. The case has been closely watched as part of the broader scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement actions and the treatment of protesters.

With the dismissal of all charges, the scheduled trial has been canceled, and the defendants are no longer facing legal action in this matter.
