Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Oil Refinery in Syzran, Escalating Long-Range Strikes

Summary

Ukrainian drones struck the Syzran oil refinery deep inside Russia, causing significant fires and marking an escalation in Ukraine's long-range attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian drones targeted the Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region, over 800 kilometers inside Russian territory, causing a significant fire, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday. The attack is part of Ukraine's intensified campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to disrupt resources funding Russia's military operations.

The governor of Russia's Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, reported that two people were killed by Ukrainian drones in Syzran but did not specify the refinery as the target. Russia's Astra news outlet indicated that the Syzran refinery, operated by oil and gas giant Rosneft, was struck.

Ukraine has been expanding its mid- and long-range strike capabilities, deploying domestically developed drone and missile technology. These advancements have enabled Ukrainian forces to push Russian troops back along parts of the front line, marking the most significant battlefield gains since 2024, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov attributed these successes partly to the disruption of Russian access to Starlink satellite services, which has provided Ukraine with a critical battlefield advantage.

Both nations continue to experience casualties from drone warfare. Russia's Defense Ministry reported downing 121 Ukrainian drones between late Wednesday and early Thursday. In the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, eight people were injured by Ukrainian drones, according to regional governor Alexander Shuvayev.

Conversely, Ukraine's air force stated it intercepted 109 out of 116 drones launched by Russia overnight, resulting in one civilian death and at least six injuries in the north, south, and east of the country, as reported by emergency services.
