Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Oil Refineries Amid Escalating Long-Range Strikes
Ukrainian drones have struck multiple Russian oil refineries, causing significant fires and casualties, as part of an intensified campaign targeting Russia's energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian drones have struck the Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region, located over 800 kilometers inside Russian territory, igniting a significant fire. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a video of the aftermath on social media, though independent verification of the attack remains pending.
The governor of Russia's Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, reported that two people were killed by Ukrainian drones in Syzran but did not specify the refinery as the target. Russia's Astra news outlet indicated that the Syzran refinery, owned by Rosneft, was struck.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. On May 15, Ukrainian drones targeted the Ryazan oil refinery, resulting in at least four fatalities and a large fire. Additionally, the Tuapse oil refinery has been hit multiple times, with the fourth strike occurring on May 1, leading to fires and environmental concerns.
Ukraine's intensified mid- and long-range strike capabilities have reportedly contributed to battlefield gains. The Institute for the Study of War noted that these strikes have degraded Russian forces' ability to conduct offensive operations and supported recent Ukrainian advances.
Both nations continue to experience casualties from drone warfare. Russia's Defense Ministry reported intercepting 121 Ukrainian drones between late Wednesday and early Thursday. In the Belgorod region, eight people were injured by Ukrainian drones, according to regional governor Alexander Shuvayev.
Conversely, Ukraine's air force stated it shot down 109 out of 116 Russian drones launched overnight, with one civilian killed and at least six others wounded in the strikes across the north, south, and east of the country.
