In Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie was defeated in the Republican primary by Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and farmer endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The Associated Press called the race shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Massie, known for his libertarian-leaning positions and frequent opposition to party leadership, faced criticism from Trump for his stances on issues such as the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and votes against the president's tax legislation.
Gallrein's victory underscores Trump's continued influence within the Republican Party, as he actively campaigned against Massie, labeling him with derogatory terms and endorsing Gallrein early in the race.
The primary contest became the most expensive U.S. House primary in history, with more than $32 million spent, much of it from pro-Israel groups and Trump-aligned organizations targeting Massie.
Massie conceded the race, acknowledging Gallrein's victory.
Gallrein will now advance to the general election on November 3, where he is expected to face Democratic opposition in the solidly Republican district.
