President Trump's Stock Trades Raise Ethical Concerns

In the first quarter of 2026, President Donald Trump executed more than 3,600 stock trades, totaling between $220 million and $750 million, according to financial disclosures filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. These transactions included investments in companies such as Nvidia, Lockheed Martin, and General Dynamics—firms directly impacted by his administration's policies.

Ethics experts have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Richard Painter, former chief White House ethics adviser under President George W. Bush, stated,

"If he were defense secretary, he would be committing a crime. Technically he can do this, but it is a fundamental breach of trust."

A spokesperson for the Trump Organization asserted that the president's investments are managed by third parties with "sole and exclusive" authority over investment decisions, and that neither President Trump nor his family are involved in selecting or approving specific investments.

Despite these assurances, the sheer volume and nature of the trades have intensified scrutiny. The financial disclosure report spans over 100 pages, detailing an average of 50 trades per day when markets were open. Notably, the portfolio includes shares in Apple, Boeing, and Tesla, whose CEOs accompanied President Trump on a recent visit to China.

Unlike his predecessors, who divested from individual stocks or placed assets in blind trusts to avoid conflicts, President Trump's active trading has prompted calls for stricter regulations. Critics argue that even if the trades are legal, they undermine public trust in the impartiality of presidential decisions.
