Texas Tech's Brendan Sorsby Declared Ineligible Amid NCAA Gambling Investigation
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been declared ineligible for the 2026 season due to an NCAA investigation into alleged gambling activities.
Texas Tech University has declared quarterback Brendan Sorsby ineligible for the 2026 season following an NCAA investigation into alleged gambling activities. The university announced its intention to seek reinstatement for Sorsby, emphasizing its commitment to supporting his health and well-being.
Sorsby, who transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech in a high-profile move reportedly involving a $5 million NIL deal, is accused of placing thousands of online bets on various sports, including wagers on Indiana football games during his redshirt year in 2022. These bets were reportedly placed on Indiana to win, and he did not participate in the games he wagered on.
In response to the NCAA's actions, Sorsby filed a lawsuit against the organization, alleging that it has "weaponized his condition to shore up a facade of competitive integrity, while simultaneously profiting from the very gambling ecosystem it polices." The NCAA's guidelines stipulate that cumulative wagers exceeding $800 could result in a loss of eligibility, with more severe penalties for larger amounts.
With Sorsby's status uncertain, attention turns to backup quarterback Will Hammond, who is recovering from a torn ACL sustained last October. Hammond has resumed throwing, and there is optimism he will be ready for the season opener against Abilene Christian on September 5.
The NCAA has not commented publicly on the ongoing investigation.
