Rory McIlroy Climbs Leaderboard at PGA Championship Amid Favorable Conditions
Rory McIlroy surged back into contention at the 2026 PGA Championship, capitalizing on improved weather and course conditions during the third round at Aronimink Golf Club.
Rory McIlroy made a significant move up the leaderboard during the third round of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Starting the day at one-over-par, McIlroy carded a four-under 66, placing him just one stroke behind the leaders as he finished his round.
The tournament's first two days were marked by challenging conditions, including strong winds and difficult pin placements, resulting in higher scores across the field. However, Saturday's warmer temperatures and calmer winds provided a more favorable environment for scoring. Justin Rose noted the impact of the improved weather, stating, "It is warming up, and I think that makes a big difference. Suddenly the ball is going a bit further."
In addition to McIlroy's performance, other players took advantage of the conditions. Kristoffer Reitan recorded a five-under round, including two eagles, to finish the day at two-under for the tournament. Chris Kirk also posted a five-under round, despite a double-bogey on the 18th hole, bringing him to two-under overall. Justin Rose and Joaquin Niemann each carded four-under rounds, both ending the day at two-under for the championship.
The improved scoring was attributed not only to the weather but also to more accessible pin placements. Chris Kirk commented, "Pin locations is a big difference, for sure. There's a handful of really tough ones out there still, but for the most part, they're much, much more accessible than they have been the last few days."
As the third round progressed, the wind began to pick up, potentially adding difficulty for the later starters, including co-leaders Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy, who teed off at 2:40 p.m. ET. With a tightly packed leaderboard and favorable conditions, the stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the 2026 PGA Championship.
