President Trump's Brokerage Account Engages in Extensive Trading Amid Policy Decisions

Summary

Recent disclosures reveal President Donald Trump's brokerage account executed over 3,600 trades in Q1 2026, totaling between $220 million and $750 million, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.

In the first quarter of 2026, President Donald Trump's brokerage account executed 3,642 trades, with a total value estimated between $220 million and $750 million, according to financial disclosures released by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on May 14. The transactions, averaging approximately 60 trades per day, involved major companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Nvidia.

The Trump Organization stated that these accounts are managed by third-party financial institutions with "sole and exclusive authority over all investment decisions," and that neither President Trump nor his family are involved in selecting or approving specific investments. However, the volume and timing of these trades have raised concerns among ethics experts. Richard Painter, a former chief White House ethics counsel, described the situation as "an unusual position for a president to be in."

Notably, on February 10, the account sold between $5 million and $25 million each of Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta stocks—the same day an influential essay predicted significant impacts of artificial intelligence on the tech industry. Subsequently, the account invested in companies like ServiceNow, Adobe, Workday, and PTC, which were anticipated to be affected by AI developments.

During the Iran conflict, the account shifted investments into safe-haven assets such as gold and U.S. Treasury bonds, even as President Trump publicly suggested the war would end soon. For instance, on March 4, the account purchased the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF, and the following day, it bought the iShares Gold Trust.

These disclosures have prompted discussions about the potential for conflicts of interest, given the president's ability to influence markets through policy decisions. While there is no evidence of illegal activity, the situation underscores the importance of transparency and ethical considerations in the financial activities of public officials.
