Five Italian Divers Die in Maldives Cave Exploration
Five Italian divers, including a university professor and her daughter, died while exploring underwater caves in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll. Recovery efforts are ongoing amid challenging conditions.
Five Italian divers have died during an underwater cave exploration in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll. The group, which included an instructor, was reported missing on Thursday after failing to resurface from a dive near Alimathaa. Maldivian authorities believe the divers were exploring a cave at a depth of approximately 50 meters when the accident occurred. One body was recovered from about 60 meters below the surface, while the remaining four are presumed to be inside the same cave. Presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef noted the cave's depth poses significant challenges, stating, "The cave is so deep that divers even with the best equipment do not try to approach." Italy's Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident and stated that the exact circumstances are under investigation. The victims have been identified as University of Genoa professor of ecology Monica Montefalcone, her daughter and student Giorgia Sommacal, research fellow Muriel Oddenino, marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. Recovery operations, involving coast guard vessels, aircraft, and dive teams, have been hampered by rough sea conditions, leading to the suspension of efforts until weather improves. Italian diplomats and technical experts are assisting in the operation, and the Italian Embassy is in contact with the victims' families. The Maldives, a popular diving destination, has experienced several fatal marine accidents in recent years, though incidents of this scale are rare.
