Russia Intensifies Aerial Assault on Ukraine, Causing Civilian Casualties

Summary

Russia launched extensive missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries, particularly in Kyiv.

Russia has intensified its aerial assault on Ukraine, launching extensive missile and drone attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties and significant infrastructure damage. The capital city, Kyiv, has been particularly affected, with at least three people killed and 40 others injured.

The latest wave of attacks began at 3 a.m. on Thursday, involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Explosions echoed throughout Kyiv, disrupting water supplies in the eastern part of the city. Ukraine's air force reported that the assault included 56 missiles of various types and nearly 700 drones.

Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that a large apartment block collapsed in the Darnytskyi district. He stated, "Eighteen apartments have been destroyed. A rescue and search operation is ongoing. According to preliminary information, 11 people have been rescued from the building."

These attacks follow heavy daylight raids across the country on Wednesday, which killed at least 14 people and injured more than 80 others. The scale and intensity of the recent assaults have led to warnings that Russia is attempting to overwhelm Ukraine's air defense systems by swarming them with drones and missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the raids as "one of the longest [and most] massive Russian attacks against Ukraine," suggesting that Moscow's aim was to spoil the "political atmosphere" during U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to China.

These developments come amid conflicting signals about the trajectory of the war. President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have suggested that the conflict may be nearing an end. However, the recent escalation casts doubt on those claims.

The attacks have also prompted international responses. Hungary summoned the Russian ambassador in response to a massive Russian drone attack that hit Ukraine's Transcarpathia region, home to a sizeable Hungarian minority. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán condemned the attack as unacceptable and called for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution.

As the situation continues to evolve, Ukraine's battlefield prospects appear to have been improving in recent months. The country has gone from pleading for international help with its defense to offering other countries expertise on how to counter attacks, thanks to its domestically developed drone technology.
