Russia Launches Extensive Drone and Missile Attacks on Ukraine, Causing Multiple Casualties

Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying over 1,560 drones and numerous ballistic and cruise missiles across multiple cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Kremenchuk, and Bila Tserkva. The attacks resulted in at least six fatalities and dozens of injuries.

In Kyiv's Darnytsia district, a nine-story apartment building was flattened, killing four people and injuring 33 others. Emergency services rescued more than 28 residents, with at least 10 individuals still unaccounted for.

Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 693 of the 731 Russian missiles and drones, yet nearly 40 munitions struck their targets, causing extensive damage to energy infrastructure and leading to temporary blackouts across 12 regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault, describing it as "one of the longest massive Russian attacks" against the country.

The escalation coincided with former U.S. President Donald Trump's summit in China with President Xi Jinping, leading Ukrainian officials to criticize Moscow’s aggression as a direct threat to global security during efforts at international diplomacy.

In response to the attacks, Hungary summoned the Russian ambassador after a drone struck near its border, marking a significant shift in Hungary’s foreign policy under newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán condemned the attack as unacceptable and called for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution.

These strikes represent some of the heaviest since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, following a brief U.S.-brokered ceasefire from May 9-11 that was only partially observed.
