Iran Deploys Fast-Attack Boats in Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing U.S. Negotiations

Summary

Iran has deployed hundreds of fast-attack boats in the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying tensions as diplomatic talks with the U.S. continue.

Iran has significantly increased its naval presence in the Strait of Hormuz, deploying 342 fast-attack boats across five monitored zones, according to maritime intelligence firm Windward AI. This deployment follows a previous swarm of approximately 200 boats that brought the strait to a near standstill on May 11. Windward AI reported a heavy concentration of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) small craft using swarm formations and escort-like behavior to disrupt commercial traffic.

The U.S. military has responded to these developments. On May 7, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported intercepting unprovoked Iranian attacks on three U.S. Navy destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. forces responded with defensive strikes targeting Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks.

In the diplomatic arena, Vice President JD Vance stated that the U.S. is making careful progress in negotiations with Iran, emphasizing a coordinated approach with regional allies. He noted the sensitivity of these discussions and the goal of preventing Iran from accessing dangerous weapons.

Iran has also expanded its definition of the Strait of Hormuz into a "vast operational area" far wider than before, according to reports. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, deputy political director of the IRGC Navy, indicated that the strait is no longer viewed as a narrow stretch around a handful of islands but has increased in both scope and military significance.

These developments have contributed to rising oil prices, with Brent crude futures increasing by 13 cents to $105.76 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures gaining 12 cents to $101.14 per barrel. Investors are closely monitoring the situation, especially ahead of a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which may address the Iran conflict.

The situation remains fluid as both military actions and diplomatic efforts continue to unfold in the region.
