Utah Woman Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Husband's Murder

摘要

Kouri Richins, who authored a children's book on grief after her husband's death, received a life sentence without parole for his murder.

Kouri Richins, a Utah mother and author of a children's book on grief, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2022 murder of her husband, Eric Richins. In March, a jury convicted her of aggravated murder after she poisoned him with a fentanyl-laced cocktail at their home near Park City.

During the sentencing on Wednesday, which coincided with what would have been Eric Richins' 44th birthday, Judge Richard Mrazik stated, "A person convicted of those things is simply too dangerous to ever be free."

Prosecutors revealed that Richins, 36, was deeply in debt, had taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge, and was involved in an extramarital affair. She was also found guilty of insurance fraud, forgery, and attempted murder for a prior poisoning attempt involving a fentanyl-laced sandwich.

Shortly before her arrest in 2023, Richins published a children's book titled "Are You With Me?" aimed at helping children cope with the death of a loved one.

Her three sons, now in the care of their aunt, expressed fear of their mother and recounted emotional and psychological abuse. In statements submitted ahead of the sentencing, the oldest son stated he does not miss his mother and fears she would harm him and his siblings if released.

Richins maintains her innocence and plans to appeal the conviction. She also faces additional financial crime charges in a separate, pending case.
