U.S. Producer Prices Surge 6% in April Amid Rising Energy Costs

摘要

The Producer Price Index rose 6% annually in April, driven by a 15.6% increase in gasoline prices, signaling potential inflationary pressures for consumers.

In April, the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand increased by 1.4% month-over-month, marking the largest monthly rise since March 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On an unadjusted basis, the PPI rose 6.0% over the past 12 months, the highest annual increase since December 2022.

The surge was primarily driven by a 2.0% increase in goods prices, with energy costs rising 7.8%. Notably, gasoline prices jumped 15.6%, accounting for more than 40% of the overall goods price increase.

Services also saw a significant uptick, with prices advancing 1.2% in April, the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Trade services margins contributed to two-thirds of this gain, climbing 2.7%.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, has exacerbated energy price volatility. The International Energy Agency reported global oil supply losses of 12.8 million barrels per day since February, creating an "unprecedented supply shock."

These rising producer costs may lead businesses to pass on expenses to consumers, potentially intensifying inflationary pressures. The Federal Reserve, which had considered cutting interest rates earlier in the year, is now expected to hold off due to these inflationary risks.
