Utah Woman Who Authored Children's Grief Book to Be Sentenced for Husband's Murder

摘要

Kouri Richins, convicted of fatally poisoning her husband, faces sentencing on what would have been his 44th birthday.

Kouri Richins, a Utah mother and real estate agent, is scheduled to be sentenced today for the 2022 murder of her husband, Eric Richins. The sentencing coincides with what would have been Eric's 44th birthday.

In March, a jury convicted Richins of aggravated murder after determining she poisoned her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl. She was also found guilty of attempted murder, insurance fraud, and forgery.

Prosecutors have requested a life sentence without the possibility of parole, emphasizing the impact on the couple's three sons. In a sentencing memorandum, they stated, "The boys deserve finality and should not have to revisit their father’s murder at future hearings or worry about the Defendant’s potential parole."

The children have expressed fear regarding their mother's potential release. The eldest son, now 13, conveyed his concerns, saying, "I’m afraid if she gets out, she will come after me and my brothers, my whole family."

Richins gained national attention after publishing a children's book on coping with grief following her husband's death.

The sentencing hearing will take place in Park City, Utah, where family members and other witnesses are expected to address the court before Judge Richard Mrazik delivers the sentence.
