Utah Author's Sons Express Fear Ahead of Mother's Sentencing for Husband's Murder

Résumé

Kouri Richins' three sons express fear of their mother ahead of her sentencing for the murder of their father, Eric Richins.

Kouri Richins, a Utah author convicted in March of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, is scheduled for sentencing today, coinciding with what would have been Eric's 44th birthday. Richins, 35, was found guilty of aggravated murder for administering a fatal dose of fentanyl to her husband in 2022 at their home near Park City. Following his death, she authored a children's book on coping with grief.

Ahead of the sentencing, the couple's three sons, aged 13, 11, and 7, submitted statements expressing fear of their mother. The eldest son stated he does not miss his mother and fears she would harm him and his brothers if released. Prosecutors have urged Judge Richard Mrazik to impose a life sentence without parole, citing the children's concerns and evidence of emotional and physical abuse.

Richins' defense attorneys had requested a delay in sentencing to prepare mitigation evidence, but the judge denied the motion, emphasizing the impact of a delay on the victims' family. Richins also faces over two dozen financial crime charges in a separate case yet to go to trial.
