Kouri Richins, convicted of murdering her husband with a fentanyl-laced cocktail, awaits sentencing amid her children's expressed fears of her potential release.

Kouri Richins, a 35-year-old Utah mother and children's book author, is scheduled for sentencing today after being convicted in March of aggravated murder for the 2022 death of her husband, Eric Richins. Prosecutors revealed that she administered a cocktail containing five times the lethal dose of fentanyl at their home near Park City. Following his death, Richins authored a children's book on grief, which she promoted prior to her arrest in 2023.

Investigations uncovered that Richins, a real estate agent, was facing significant financial difficulties and had secretly taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband, totaling over $4 million. She was also found guilty of attempted murder for a prior poisoning attempt and additional charges including insurance fraud and forgery.

Ahead of the sentencing, statements from the couple's three sons, now aged 13, 11, and 7, were presented to the court. The eldest expressed fear that if his mother were released, she might harm him and his brothers. The middle child conveyed sadness over their father's absence during significant life events and a desire to live without fear of their mother causing harm. The youngest stated he would be "so scared" if she were released.

Prosecutors have recommended a life sentence without the possibility of parole, emphasizing the severity of the crimes and the impact on the victims' family. Richins' defense team has not provided comments ahead of the sentencing hearing, which coincides with what would have been Eric Richins' 44th birthday.
