Cambridge Shooting Suspect Had Prior Convictions and Recent Psychiatric Release
Tyler Brown, 46, opened fire on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, injuring two, shortly after his release from a psychiatric hospital and with a history of violent offenses.
On May 11, 2026, Tyler Brown, 46, allegedly opened fire with an assault-style rifle along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, injuring two individuals. The incident occurred just three days after Brown's release from McLean Psychiatric Hospital, where he had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression.
Prior to the shooting, Brown had a history of violent offenses. In 2020, he was charged with attempting to kill Boston police officers and later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including armed assault with intent to murder. He was sentenced to five to six years in prison and was released on parole in March 2025.
On the day of the incident, Brown reportedly made threats of self-harm and displayed a weapon during a FaceTime call with his parole officer. Following this, Boston police obtained a warrant to track Brown's phone, leading them to Cambridge.
The shooting resulted in life-threatening injuries to two bystanders who were sitting in their cars along Memorial Drive. Both victims are receiving treatment at a Boston hospital. Brown was confronted by a Massachusetts State Police trooper and a civilian with a legal firearm. After an exchange of gunfire, Brown was struck multiple times, treated on scene, and transported to a Boston hospital.
Brown now faces several charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and firearms offenses. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage to contact State Police Detectives at 781-897-6600.
