U.S. Stock Futures Fall as New Tariffs Announced Ahead of Earnings Reports
U.S. equity futures declined early Monday as investors reacted to new tariff announcements and prepared for upcoming inflation data and corporate earnings.
U.S. stock futures declined on Monday morning, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropping 140 points, or 0.3%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures also fell by 0.3% each, as investors weighed the impact of new tariffs and awaited second-quarter earnings reports.
President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that the United States will impose 30% tariffs on goods from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. In response, leaders from the EU and Mexico said they would continue discussions with the U.S. administration this month in hopes of negotiating a lower tariff rate.
The new tariffs come ahead of key inflation data expected this week, which may provide insight into how existing tariffs are affecting the broader economy. Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Financial Group, commented Friday that inflation is already present due to tariffs, noting, "It's just a question of who eats it. Those companies that have pricing power means that consumers are going to eat it. Those companies that don't have pricing power means that companies are going to eat it via a cut in their profit margin."
